About the work
People asleep on mats have a place beside the activity of a market. Dumerlus Jeune belongs to the Artibonite group of painters. Haiti’s produce trade connects rural growers with larger markets. Here, rest shares the scene with work. The gathering feels spacious enough to hold different paces of life, asking the eye to slow down as well as move on.
Tall trees with red and orange foliage rise over striped yellow and red awnings. Women sell among baskets, pots and cooking fires. A man in a straw hat walks at the left, and distant figures climb a path.
About the artist
Dumerlus Jeune was born in Petite Rivière de l'Artibonite, Haiti, on 15 June 1970. According to the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, he began painting at fifteen and studied with Saincilus Ismael in Port-au-Prince. He is also a musician, singer, composer and dancer. He has worked with Galerie Macondo in Pittsburgh since 2006, which describes him as a painter of the Artibonite. His recorded acrylic paintings include Revolution, Mariage and Village Life, all dated 2006.
