About the work
Three girls jump together while two boys turn the rope and a smaller girl crouches to watch. Françoise Jean gives each child a part in the scene’s rhythm. The game gathers the players together; the watcher adds a quieter note beside them. There is room for both the excitement of taking a turn and the pleasure of looking on.
Yellow, red and spotted dresses stand out on green grass, with pink in the foreground. Red flowers and dark seed pods grow behind the group below a misty hillside and cloudy sky.
About the artist
Françoise Jean was born on 2 June 1953 in Les Anglais, in southern Haiti. As a child she drew rural scenes on cloth for her mother to embroider. In 1967 she moved to Port-au-Prince, and in 1968 she began painting with her neighbor, Pétion Savain. After Savain died in 1973 she worked with the painter Jean Richard Coachy. She paints children only, often at play in village settings. Her work has been exhibited in Haiti, Martinique and Guadeloupe, and her painting Children Playing with Kites appeared on the cover of a Broward County schools curriculum guide.
