About the work
White outlines join boats, people and houses in a single rhythm. Hilome Jose painted with a palette knife, developing his own distinctive style. Here, each boundary helps the eye move from one part of the view to another. The scene stays connected without losing the separate presences that make an ordinary stretch of shore feel full of life.
Tall yellow-striped sails stand beside a red rowing boat. Women in coloured dresses walk a grey road past pastel thatched homes; one man steps into the vessels and another rows across the bay. Thick paint textures the surface.
About the artist
Hilome Jose was born in Jérémie, on the south-western tip of Haiti, in 1947. In the late 1960s he moved to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a carpenter. Through a mutual friend he met the painter Calixte Henry and began to paint under his guidance. He learnt to apply paint with a palette knife, which gives his pictures a textured surface. His subjects include harbors and waterfronts with sailboats, villages and groups of people.
