About the work

A pale pool opens a resting place for the eye. Henri-Robert Brésil returned repeatedly to green landscapes filled with flamingos, streams and waterfalls. Here, the lightness at the centre holds our attention quietly. The view offers a place to pause, letting a small opening carry the welcome of a much larger scene.

Pink flamingos and white wading birds stand amid fan palms, bamboo-like stems and rounded trees. Broad ferns frame the foreground, and white birds fly across the dark canopy.

About the artist

Henri-Robert Brésil was born in Gonaïves, Haiti, in 1952. He moved to Port-au-Prince in 1973 and began his career as a painter there. In 1981 he received the ISPAN-UNESCO prize of honor at the Museum of Haitian Art at Saint-Pierre College. He then exhibited at the Issa, Nader and Marassa galleries in Haiti and abroad in the United States, Puerto Rico, France, Italy and Switzerland. His landscapes showed dense green vegetation, streams, waterfalls and pink flamingos. He also painted religious subjects. In 2024 the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth included him in Surrealism and Us. He died in 1999.
