About the work
Deep folds give a woman’s long white dress a carefully arranged poise. Pierre-Louis Riché’s exaggerated figures bring satire into his paintings. Here, the broad silhouette leaves room for both elegance and humour. The eye enjoys the care of her appearance without needing to know where she is going, letting a formal presence hold its own quiet company.
A blue hat with a large bow, pearl jewellery and blue shoes with white bows accompany a small basket of white flowers. Grey sails rise from moored boats against sea and cloudy sky.
About the artist
Pierre-Louis Riché was born into a farming family in Cap-Haïtien on 19 October 1954. He completed secondary school, and at the age of twenty he began to paint in the studio of Philomé Obin in Cap-Haïtien. For almost twenty years he painted historical subjects, such as a general with his family before the Citadelle, dated 1981. He then turned to the rounded, full-bodied figures known as "les grosses patates". He lives and works in Port-au-Prince.
