About the work
Long dark strokes give arms and headwraps a flowing rhythm. Market painting became a widely shared Haitian subject after Laurent Casimir’s early examples. Pira Casso has returned to it in different styles. Here, the eye moves through the company without needing to settle on a single person, finding the life of the gathering in its closely joined presences.
Blue, green and white dresses and pink straw hats fill the crowd. Wide baskets carry round red, green and yellow fruit; other women hold trays of pale grain. More baskets occupy the lower edge.
About the artist
Pira Casso is the name under which Petizil Durand paints; galleries also spell it Piracasso. Galerie Macondo records that he was born in Pétion-Ville on 22 May 1971, began to paint in 1989 and took the name in homage to Pablo Picasso. His father was a butcher and his mother sold goods in the market. He paints market scenes, a long-established subject in Haitian painting, and the gallery describes his treatment of it as his own and as changing over the years.
