About the work

A woman’s profile fills a round canvas. Charles Jean-Pierre speaks of his art as reclaiming forgotten bodies and reimagining their stories. Here, the enclosing shape keeps the presence close. The eye returns to the silhouette as a whole after following its small distinctions, finding a person to meet within a view that offers many separate places to linger.

Torn maroon, rose and turquoise pieces form hair against flat violet. A long teardrop earring and round beads hang beside a turquoise, sky blue, yellow and grey-green patchwork of face and shoulders, textured like printed paper.

About the artist

Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre is a Haitian-American artist and educator, born in 1983. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of parents of Haitian descent. In 2006 he moved to Washington, D.C., to study for a master's degree at Howard University, and he has since taught art at American University. He works mainly in abstract and figurative collage built from monoprints, and his work addresses political, social and economic structures. He has created murals in Chicago, Washington, Port-au-Prince, London and Paris. Three US embassies have acquired his work, and he exhibited at the US Embassy in Malawi through Art in Embassies.
