About the work
A standing woman turns her head towards us, with a darker shadow behind her. Charles Jean-Pierre speaks of his art as reclaiming forgotten bodies. Here, the two presences give the eye different ways to follow one person. Our attention moves between the direct meeting and its quieter echo, finding room for both within an arrangement that keeps the encounter close.
Cobalt blue fills a tall, narrow canvas. Maroon, teal and blue collage pieces make gathered hair. Finely textured white paper forms a sleeveless dress, and turquoise, blue and orange patchwork shapes the arm.
About the artist
Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre is a Haitian-American artist and educator, born in 1983. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of parents of Haitian descent. In 2006 he moved to Washington, D.C., to study for a master's degree at Howard University, and he has since taught art at American University. He works mainly in abstract and figurative collage built from monoprints, and his work addresses political, social and economic structures. He has created murals in Chicago, Washington, Port-au-Prince, London and Paris. Three US embassies have acquired his work, and he exhibited at the US Embassy in Malawi through Art in Embassies.
