About the work
A young man faces us, one hand raised to his face and the other in his pocket. Charles Jean-Pierre uses painting to reflect on and question society. Here, the still posture gives the eye a place to pause. The small gesture leaves the meeting open, holding our attention with enough stillness to make an ordinary pause feel worth returning to.
Collage assembles a blue, red, gold, green and violet suit over a dark patterned shirt and pale tie, with dark blue shoes. A diagonal divides flat terracotta pink into a lighter wall and darker floor.
About the artist
Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre is a Haitian-American artist and educator, born in 1983. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of parents of Haitian descent. In 2006 he moved to Washington, D.C., to study for a master's degree at Howard University, and he has since taught art at American University. He works mainly in abstract and figurative collage built from monoprints, and his work addresses political, social and economic structures. He has created murals in Chicago, Washington, Port-au-Prince, London and Paris. Three US embassies have acquired his work, and he exhibited at the US Embassy in Malawi through Art in Embassies.
