About the work
A fishing village curves around a blue bay. Hilome Jose makes the sweep of the shore a route for the eye. Near and far belong to one welcoming view, and each small part has room within it. Looking follows the curve, then comes back to the whole, finding the pleasure of a place held together by its shape.
Women in red, mauve, white and blue stand along a grey road before pastel thatched houses. Yellow-striped sails, an empty pink boat and a man in red occupy the waterfront. Rounded trees dot green hills; white outlines define everything.
About the artist
Hilome Jose was born in Jérémie, on the south-western tip of Haiti, in 1947. In the late 1960s he moved to Port-au-Prince, where he worked as a carpenter. Through a mutual friend he met the painter Calixte Henry and began to paint under his guidance. He learnt to apply paint with a palette knife, which gives his pictures a textured surface. His subjects include harbors and waterfronts with sailboats, villages and groups of people.
