About the work
A woman’s gaze lifts slightly upwards. The small turn gives the still figure a direction beyond the picture’s edge. Our attention follows that glance, pausing where it leaves the frame. Looking becomes a quiet meeting, close enough to linger while allowing strength and weariness to sit together in her expression.
Umber, sienna and turquoise model the body, with glints of lavender and gold. A stripped background isolates the subject, whose brushwork combines realism and abstraction with sculptural depth.
About the artist
SAMDI is the name Xavier Delatour paints under. He is a contemporary Haitian artist based in Miami, Florida, and a grandson of Carmel Delatour, who founded Rainbow Art Display in her home in 1972. He describes his work as Sen Soley: painting from a rhythm, in a space where the self looks inward and the possibilities are endless. His paintings combine cubist-style portraits with a semi-abstract approach to figuration, and at their core are self-exploration and the understanding of the spirit. They can reflect deep emotional trauma and at the same time express the beauty of love, and they leave viewers to look inward and make their own sense of what they see and feel. His group exhibitions include CORNERSTONE (Paris Texas LA Gallery, Los Angeles, 2018), Carifesta (National Museum and Art Gallery, Trinidad and Tobago, 2018), Roots of the Spirit (ArtServe, Fort Lauderdale, 2019) and Surface Issues (MOCA, North Miami, 2019). His latest works are in Stanek Gallery's show What We Carry in Miami, from September 18 to November 7, 2026.
