About the work
Tools on the wall bring a Nativity close to everyday domestic space. Wilson Bigaud had already brought a biblical subject together with Haitian life in his cathedral mural Miracle at Cana. Here, the familiar setting gives the gathering its quiet welcome. The eye finds room for wonder within an ordinary interior, where each presence belongs to the same shared moment.
An infant lies on white cloth inside a plank-walled house, between haloed Joseph and Mary and two kings. A framed star hangs behind them. Two goats and a dove rest in front, with a donkey further back.
About the artist
Wilson Bigaud (1931–2010) began painting at fifteen under the guidance of Hector Hyppolite. He was associated with the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince, which held an exhibition of his work in 1954. He was one of the painters chosen to paint the murals of the Episcopal Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince. He worked for many years in Petit-Goâve and painted detailed, often humorous scenes of Haitian daily life, as well as Vodou ceremonies. According to his dealer, his work is in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
