About the work
Tall sunflowers lean over a winding path. Jonas Profil said his paintings speak of peace and love. Here, the flowers make the walk feel generous, offering a route for the eye as well as for those within the scene. Looking follows the way ahead, then pauses to take in the welcome of what grows beside it.
Pale yellow petals surround dark seed heads on crossing stems. Pink blooms and rounded shrubs grow below. Two small figures walk towards green hills under a soft pink and blue sky, all worked in thick, short strokes.
About the artist
Jonas Profil was born in Fort-Liberté, near Cap-Haïtien, on 22 July 1957. His father sold souvenirs. At eighteen he spent the money he had been given for school on art supplies and has painted ever since. He lives and works in Port-au-Prince but still regards himself as a Capois and adds "Cap Haïtien" to his signature. His paintings comment on Haitian life with humour and fantasy, in pale and pastel colors. In 2016 he took part in DNA of Art, a London exhibition that raised funds for victims of Hurricane Matthew.
