About the work
Palm fronds rise above a crowd moving along a dirt road. In Alexandre Grégoire’s procession, that shared direction gives the gathering its rhythm. The eye follows the company forward, taking in a scene that feels busy without becoming hurried. There is room to linger over individuals while still feeling the movement of the whole.
A robed man rides a white donkey beside a woman under a pink umbrella. Green hills surround them, with sheep resting in the fields and a child seated at the top of the path.
About the artist
Alexandre Grégoire was born in Jacmel on 29 August 1922. He studied cabinet making, then joined the army in 1939 and played tuba and saxophone in its band. In the 1950s he left the army for the band of the National Palace. He turned to painting in 1968, encouraged by fellow painters and by the Centre d'Art in Port-au-Prince. His pictures showed Vodou ceremonies, daily life and historical events in a naïve style. His work is in the Musée d'Art Haïtien and the Waterloo museum in Iowa. He died in Jacmel on 28 July 2001.
