About the work
Four pigeons crowd together, one resting in front with its head turned back. Pigeons are a familiar subject in Gesner Armand’s work. Here, the close company gives the eye a place to linger. The front bird offers a quiet pause within the gathering, drawing our attention back to a single presence before we take in the group again.
Short, thick strokes mix violet, rose, red, blue, teal and cream in the feathers. A round brown fruit lies at the left on grass, against blue-green foliage.
About the artist
Gesner Armand was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, on 11 June 1936. He joined the Centre d'Art while still young, and there Pierre Monosiet introduced him to watercolor. He spent 1958 to 1960 in Mexico. In 1960 a French government scholarship took him to Paris, where he stayed until 1962. He then returned to Haiti and settled in Croix-des-Bouquets. He served as director of the Museum of Haitian Art at Saint-Pierre College. He painted peasant life, carnivals and pigeons in many colors. The Spencer Museum of Art holds his painting Doves. He died in Croix-des-Bouquets on 10 June 2008.
