About the work
Small walkers cross a furrowed field beneath two tall royal palms. Jean-Adrien Seide’s landscapes draw on places including the Artibonite plain and Jacmel’s mountains. Here, the upright trees give the long view a steady anchor. The people lend a human scale to the open ground, letting the eye travel onwards without losing its place close to them.
Farmland and woods extend towards a lake and a blue expanse beyond. Scattered houses and rounded trees occupy the middle distance under pale sky and soft clouds. Fine, ridged strokes texture the paint.
About the artist
Jean-Adrien Seide was born in Les Cayes, Haiti, on 18 November 1956. Accounts of his training differ. Expressions Galerie d'Art says he studied with Jean-Claude Louis from 1973 and enrolled at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1977, while Galerie Nader describes him as self-taught. After his father's death he moved to Venezuela, where he studied with Efraín López. He paints landscapes of open fields crossed by upright trees and stretching to a distant horizon, sometimes with farm workers, drawing on the Artibonite River, the mountains of Jacmel and the waterfalls of Saut-Mathurin and Péligre. One of his landscapes appeared in the 2009 Art in Embassies exhibition in Port-au-Prince.
