About the work
Browns and creams bring Marcel Wah’s market close. Haiti’s food trade includes distinct jobs: gathering and moving produce, and selling it in the market. Here, the narrow palette gives people and their gestures centre stage. The eye finds the life of the gathering in relationships between individuals, with little distraction from the company they keep.
Women in headscarves and straw hats lean around a box-shaped stall. One sits beside produce baskets; head-loads and crates pass beneath thatched roofs behind her. A man at the left holds a stick.
About the artist
Marcel Wah was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, into a Haitian-Chinese family of artists: his father, Marcel Wah Sr., his uncles and his brother also painted. After eight years in the United States Air Force, he studied painting in California, earning a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute and an MFA from California College of the Arts. He founded a gallery and an art publishing company, and in 2007 he launched the International Caribbean Art Fair in New York, produced by his company Studio Wah Exhibitions. He now works mainly as an entrepreneur but still paints.
