About the work

Short, loose strokes give this busy gathering a restless surface. Moving produce and selling it are different roles in Haiti’s food trade. In Nyperking Jean Baptiste’s market, the eye keeps moving through the activity without settling on a single person. The pleasure lies in the company of the whole, with each presence finding room inside it.

Women in bright dresses and headscarves carry head-baskets or sit among produce before wooden houses with rusted roofs. A man in white and blue walks through them. Deep, streaked blue and violet fill the sky.

About the artist

Nyperking Jean Baptiste was born in Port-au-Prince on 22 September 1973 and grew up in Carrefour, in a neighborhood of painters and sculptors. Two of his brothers are also painters, and in 1991, at the age of eighteen, he followed them and began to paint. The painter Ernst Louizor was a close neighbor, and by watching him work Jean Baptiste learnt to paint with a knife. His subjects are scenes of everyday Haitian life, including markets, cockfights and rara bands.
