About the work
One pigeon tucks its head down beside two companions. Gesner Armand returned often to pigeons as a subject. Here, the small difference in posture gives the group a quiet warmth. Our attention can rest with one bird, then move towards another, finding enough variety in their company to reward a slower look without needing a larger scene.
Rose-pink, blue and violet mingle with cream and brown in thick paint. Grass lies before dark green foliage, with two round brown fruits on the ground. A signature and date appear at the lower right.
About the artist
Gesner Armand was born in Croix-des-Bouquets, Haiti, on 11 June 1936. He joined the Centre d'Art while still young, and there Pierre Monosiet introduced him to watercolor. He spent 1958 to 1960 in Mexico. In 1960 a French government scholarship took him to Paris, where he stayed until 1962. He then returned to Haiti and settled in Croix-des-Bouquets. He served as director of the Museum of Haitian Art at Saint-Pierre College. He painted peasant life, carnivals and pigeons in many colors. The Spencer Museum of Art holds his painting Doves. He died in Croix-des-Bouquets on 10 June 2008.
