About the work
A man fishes from the bank while another figure stands on a narrow boat. Guerda Louizor gives this small meeting of land and water room to hold our attention. The two positions offer different ways into the scene. Our eye moves between them, finding a quiet balance in their separation. The scene feels unhurried, with each person holding a place within the view.
A wooded point carries a small house among tall trees and rocks. Boats lie pulled up at the left, and distant hills fade into blue haze. Thick, textured strokes cover the surface.
About the artist
Guerda Louizor is a Haitian painter, recorded by several sources as born in 1940. One gallery gives her birthplace as Port-au-Prince and another as La Vallée de Jacmel, on 15 November 1940. She was the wife and student of the painter Ernst Louizor, who encouraged her to paint in an impressionistic manner. Her recorded subjects include bathers, washing day in the countryside, rara bands and domino players. Her paintings were sold through galleries in Port-au-Prince.
