About the work

A yellow flower rests in a woman’s hand beneath a dark hat heaped with blossoms. Jean-Claude Legagneur is a central painter of Haiti’s School of Beauty, known for his paintings of Haitian women. Here, the single bloom gives the elaborate arrangement a smaller companion. The eye moves between the two, finding the pleasure of abundance alongside a quieter, simpler gesture.

A sheer veil falls over the outward-facing eyes. A white blouse gathers at the neckline, with a black ribbon tied at the throat. Cool blue-green fills the background; the signature appears at the upper right.

About the artist

Jean-Claude Legagneur was born in Haiti in 1947 and was drawn to painting at an early age. He moved to the United States to study art and there worked with the Haitian artists Bernard Wah, Raphaël Denis, Davertige and Luckner Lazard. In 1975 he returned to Haiti and joined the School of Beauty, alongside Jean-René Jérôme and Bernard Séjourné. His figurative paintings favor calm portraits of women. In 2017 the Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami, showed Faces of Freedom, a series of his portraits.
