About the work
A woman holds out a cup as a man raises a wreath of flowers. Water spirits recur in Raymond Beauduy’s paintings. Here, the two gestures give the meeting its quiet focus. Our attention passes between what is held and what is offered, keeping the encounter close without telling us who these people are or what words they exchange.
The braided figure stands in blue water at a sea cave, wearing beads and orange cloth. Her companion steps onto a rock beside a bottle. Coloured trees cover the arch, with a sailboat and palm-lined coast beyond.
About the artist
Raymond Beauduy is a Haitian painter who signs his work CK Beauduy. An AFP report in April 2010 gave his age as 50. His paintings have shown pastoral scenes and Vodou subjects, among them Lasiren and other water spirits; works dated 1995 and 1997 have been sold through Galerie Monnin and Galerie Macondo. After the January 2010 earthquake he waited two months before painting again. His new canvases then set ruined houses and bodies in the streets, in gray tones, beside the rural landscapes he had painted before.
