About the work

Separate pieces of paper gather into one presence. For Charles Jean-Pierre, painting is a way to reflect on society, inspire it and question it. In Freedom, the eye follows the joins as well as the whole. What holds together also keeps its differences, giving us a person to meet and an arrangement to explore, each fragment keeping a place of its own.

Green, ochre, rose and blue form the face below jagged hair. A darker blue shadow falls behind the head, and pale textured shoulders sit against a flat blue ground.

About the artist

Charles Philippe Jean-Pierre is a Haitian-American artist and educator, born in 1983. He grew up on the South Side of Chicago, the son of parents of Haitian descent. In 2006 he moved to Washington, D.C., to study for a master's degree at Howard University, and he has since taught art at American University. He works mainly in abstract and figurative collage built from monoprints, and his work addresses political, social and economic structures. He has created murals in Chicago, Washington, Port-au-Prince, London and Paris. Three US embassies have acquired his work, and he exhibited at the US Embassy in Malawi through Art in Embassies.
