About the work

Reflections stretch down through the dark water of a harbour. Johnny Valbrun II gives the eye a quiet place to wander. Looking follows the downward movement, then returns to what lies above it. The view has room for both a steady arrangement and a less settled echo, letting our attention move between the two without breaking the stillness.

Moored boats line a quay before buildings and masts, drawn in thin white and pale blue lines against deep blues. Flecks of white light scatter across the night sky.

About the artist

Johnny Valbrun II, also known as Valbrun II, was a son of the Haitian painter Jacques Valbrun and a brother of the painter Reginald Valbrun. He worked in an abstract, surrealist manner, with expressive forms, layered symbols and strong color drawn from Haitian visual culture. He also encouraged and advised younger Haitian artists. His paintings went to galleries and private collections outside Haiti. In February 2002 he took part in Heritage, a group exhibition of Haitian painters in the Dominican Republic. He died in 2005.
