About the work
A cluster of green coconuts gives the crown of a palm its centre of weight. Jean Laguerre brings the tree close enough to fill our view. There is a whole landscape in this small part of it: growth pressing together, one form leading towards another. Looking closely becomes a way of finding space within an arrangement that first feels dense.
Long yellow-green fronds cross the canvas, with pale brown husks and white flowers above. Blue sky and white cloud show through gaps between the leaves. The signature sits at the lower right.
About the artist
Jean Laguerre is a Haitian painter from Les Cayes, in the south of Haiti. A dealer's biography citing the Haitian Art Society gives his birth year as 1968 and says he began painting in 1983 after classical studies. He taught himself, with guidance from the painter Valcin II. His work centers on still lifes of Haitian fruit and trees, such as breadfruit, papaya, corossol and green coconuts, dominated by yellows, ochres and greens and often set against a rural background.
