About the work
Three cachiman fruits sit side by side, each with a pale curled stem. Carel Blain gives this small gathering room to hold our attention. The pleasure is in looking closely: following a curve, then returning to the group. Familiar forms become companions in an arrangement that rewards a pause, with each one keeping its own small presence.
Orange, brown and black mottle the round skins against deep blue. A few loose white strokes form the cloth beneath. The painting is signed and dated 2016 at the lower right.
About the artist
Carel Blain was born in Port-au-Prince on 23 September 1961 and grew up among artists in Pétion-Ville. He was educated at Collège Roger Anglade and later studied at Lindsey Hopkins Technical College in Miami. He taught himself to paint and in the 1990s began painting portraits and children in village settings. His gallery biography names Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh among the artists he admired, with the Haitian painters Jean-Claude Legagneur, Françoise Jean, Lesly Exumé and Carlo Dayan. He teaches young artists and has exhibited in New York, Florida and Haiti.
